By  |

Love your dupattas? Your designer salwar kameez isn’t complete without a stunning dupatta. A dupatta is not just a piece of clothing but it is an integral part of your entire ensemble. It is such a versatile piece of garment as sometimes it acts as a coverup, protecting you from the scorching sun. You also cover your head with a dupatta when you pay homage to God, at a place of worship and so on. It is also a way of tapping to your feminine side. You can explore your feminine style in a number of ways such as designs, colors, drapes et al.

If you are a fan of ethnic wear, you are bound to find a number of dupattas folded neatly or not-so-neatly in your wardrobe and you do not have to delve too deep into your wardrobe to find them either. Dupattas are your savior when it comes to all your party wear salwar kameez outfits or casual ethnic wear. Not to forget it can prove to be a perfect finishing touch to your boho-chic getup.

And the best part you can revamp an old outfit with different dupattas. There are so many different ways to change the look of your ethnic wear. This helps add variety to your ensembles. Just imagine all you need is a few solid kurtas and several dupattas and you can very well incite the designer in you.  Just stock on a number of beautiful dupattas in your wardrobe and you are good to go. When you are choosing a dupatta for yourself you have to keep the following things in mind.

How to Choose a Dupatta for your Outfit

If you are choosing the right designer salwar kameez, online or at a store near you, consider the following options,

1. Stay body co-ordinated

Wondering what that is? Well, if you are slim you can choose pastel shades. But if you are not too slim you can opt for darker hues. You know what they say about black being slimming. Not only black, there are other dark colors too which can do justice to your frame.

2. Which dupatta to choose

If you are looking to enhance your ethnic look, look for dupattas, especially contrasting ones that can help make you look ravishing. Green and pink, fuchsia and yellow are some of my favorite color combos. Ensure that your kurta is of a different color and your dupatta is of a different one.

3. Heavily embroidered or not?

When it comes to dupattas you are spoilt for choice. Different states have different styles of dupattas to offer, there is phulkari, Kashmiri embroidery, kantha stitch and so on. Each state has something unique to offer and it adds a timeless elegance to your ensemble. These embroidered dupattas look swell with plain kurtas and elevate the look to a different level.

4. Combine prints and solids

You can wear a printed stole or dupatta with a printed outfit too, there are no hard and fast rules as such. But yes, you needn’t go overboard so much so that the prints clash. So, ensure that there is a common thread between the outfit and the dupatta. Mixing different prints is an art and you need to exercise the same with caution.

5. The Right Length Matters

Sometimes you need an extra-long dupatta, sometimes a playful scarf does just fine. If you are dressing up for an occasion a long and elaborate dupatta works beautifully with salwar kameez bridal wear. A plush dupatta with a rich border is what enhances a gorgeous outfit.

Choose Different Kinds of Materials for Dupattas

There are dupattas which come in a variety of materials. If you are dressing up for the summer choose more breathable fabric which has minimalistic embroidery and the material is lightweight. Try for net dupattas which are easy to carry off. This kind of dupattas looks ethereal with both salwar kameez and lehengas. Then there are georgette dupattas, slightly heavier silk dupattas and so on. Choosing your dupattas according to the weather makes sense.  So that you do not end up wearing a woolen stole for the summer or a flimsy chiffon dupatta for the winters. Try the below-mentioned variations to enhance your ethnic wear.

  • Banarasi style

Banarasi dupattas are timelessly classic and the design together with the embroidery gels well with all your festive outings.

  • Two-toned dupattas

A two-toned dupatta brightens your staid and regular salwar- kameez, it gives your outfit a gorgeous and embellished look. If your kurta is simple don’t worry your dupatta will make up for it.

  • Striped dupatta

Stripes are on everything nowadays so can dupattas be far behind? A tried and tested look is a kurta- palazzo combination with a striped dupatta, works every, single, time.

  • Pochompally dupattas

A good blend of traditional charm and modern sensibility weaves brilliant magic. So you can try a long kurta with a Pochompally number and it is indeed a winning combination. It adds colors to your boring salwar kameez and takes your look to the next level.

  • Translucent dupattas

Translucent dupattas are sheer magic. (Pun fully intended) It is lightweight and perfect for those sultry summers when you have to deck up, yet do not want to end up looking like a Christmas tree. It is light on your skin and offers comfort and style in one single breath.

  • Bright Colors

Rainbow in your wardrobe? Thanks to your dupatta collection, yes what are dupattas without a bit of color? The bolder the merrier! The reds, the fuchsias, the purples, the yellows, they all bring in a little extra to the table. They are particularly handy in jazzing up white kurtas. Just change the dupatta and your same white kurta will get a fresh new reprieve.

A dupatta is a bit of an enigma, no wonder there have been peans peened on this fluttering piece of garment. It epitomizes everything that a woman stands for, it is feminine, bold and beautiful, a perfect combination!
